About me
Hello, welcome and congratulations on your pregnancy!
What a transformative and rewarding journey lies ahead of you.
My name is Hannah and I’m glad that you’re reading this. I am deeply passionate about giving parents the support they deserve, during pregnancy, birth and beyond. I serve the Keynsham/Bristol/Bath area.
Becoming a mother to my daughter in March 2024 taught me so much about myself and the motherhood journey. As mothers, we are strong and special and - I firmly believe - should be given the judgement-free space and support to dial into our deep inner wisdom and the intuitive knowledge that we hold about our bodies and babies.
Pregnancy can be a joyful time but also overwhelming, with well-meaning but often conflicting advice coming from friends, family and health professionals. I see my role as holding space for you and supporting you to make decisions that you feel good about, by giving you the tools and confidence to navigate information and services available.
Together, I hope we can sort through the noise, so that you can feel calm and informed. I’d like you to journey into parenthood knowing that you are the expert of your body and baby, feeling excited and clear about your choices.
A bit about me personally - I live in Keynsham with my husband, daughter, chocolate Labrador and chicken. We love spending time outdoors, whether that be growing our own vegetables in the garden or going for a morning stroll in the community woodlands.
I would be honoured to talk with you to understand if I could be helpful to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a doula?
A doula is a companion during a significant life event. A birth doula in particular, is there to support families through pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. A doula is not an ‘expert’ nor ‘medical’ role, instead a doula creates and holds space for the family - nurturing and empowering them to find their own answers to questions and to make their own confident and informed decisions. Practically speaking, a few examples of the kind of things you could expect from a doula include: supporting you to compile your birth preferences, helping you with breathing techniques in labour and listening to you talk about how you’re finding the first few days of parenthood. Ultimately a doula is there to support you and your wishes, so the service you receive will be shaped by your needs and preferences.
What are the benefits of having doula support?
Doula UK, the professional association for doulas, has reviewed the research into the impact of having doula support and summarised the benefits as:
Shorter labours with fewer complications.
Reduced requests for pain medication including epidural.
Reduced likelihood of a caesarean birth or an assisted delivery.
Higher likelihood of establishing and continuing breastfeeding.
More positive feelings about a birth and postnatal experience.
Reduced rate of induction of labour.
Improvement of equity and culturally responsive care.
You can read further into the research on the Doula UK website here: https://doula.org.uk/research-papers
Is it worth investing in doula support?
Whether to invest in doula support is a personal choice.
It can feel like there is a long shopping list during pregnancy - pram, car seat, clothes etc. Given the benefits of doula support, found in the research to include shorter labours with fewer complications and more positive feelings about a birth, I’d encourage parents-to-be who can afford such support to consider its value. A family feeling nurtured and positive at the beginning of a new phase of their journey together is so important and doula support can contribute to that significantly.
For those people who would like doula support but can’t afford it, Doula UK has an Access Fund that enables the provision of free doula services to those experiencing ‘disadvantage or financial hardship’. Referrals are made by healthcare professionals, social workers and charities. You can find out more here: https://doula.org.uk/access-fund
Why might I choose you as my birth doula?
Becoming a mother has been so deeply transformative for me. I am focussed everyday on being present and connected to my own daughter and family - and have also felt a deep calling into the service of other women. I will be the birth doula that you need me to be. Your wishes and needs will be at the heart of our relationship and I will support you in what you feel are the right, positive and informed choices for you. This relationship needs to feel right for you and I’d recommend speaking to at least a couple of doulas, to get a sense of who feels like the right fit.
Can I meet you before committing?
Of course! It’s really important for us to meet to find out about each other and feel comfortable and confident in the relationship. I’ll look forward to answering any questions you may have, plus I’ll have questions for you. I’d like to understand what you’re looking for from a doula, so that I can be confident that I am the right doula for you. Us doulas are a tight-knit bunch, so if you’re looking for something specific that I can’t support - I will do my best to introduce you to another doula who can. Having a baby is such a precious, intimate and treasured experience - it is so important that we feel comfortable together.
Services
All-inclusive doula package - £2,000
For support during pregnancy, birth and beyond.
I have trained in the Continuum Doula model, which places emphasis on continuity of care and support. We will see each other for six sessions antenatally, which can involve me coming to appointments with you - if you’d like that. I’ll be there to support you for the birth, by which point we’ll have developed a beautiful relationship and a deep understanding around birth preferences. Then, I’ll see you for six sessions postnatally, to support you to settle into life as a mother and reflect on the unparalleled rite of passage that is birth.
My wish is that you feel comfortable and confident in your pregnancy, birth and beyond - with strong awareness of what you want and how you’d like the people around you to support that. I’d like to create space for you, so that you feel held but ultimately confident in your own capabilities. You already have everything you need within you and I’ll be there to help you believe that that’s true.
I live in Keynsham and serve the Keynsham/Bristol/Bath area.
What does the £2,000 fee include?
Six antenatal sessions, during which I’ll get to know you, how you like your tea and develop an understanding of your birth preferences and values.
I’ll be there for the birth, departing once you’re feeling settled and your baby has had their first feed.
Six postnatal sessions, to support you in your new role/s as parent/s.
Contact outside of our time together, to help answer any questions you may have or process new situations or information.
Any research needed from me, to support you in the specifics of your journey.
Travel costs to enable me to be there for you during our sessions and the birth.
Before you book, we’ll meet for a free consultation meeting - so that we can get to know each other and answer any questions. There is absolutely no obligation for you to book after the free consultation meeting, it is entirely your choice.
